Lead Inspector – Initial

This three-day course teaches the basics of performing these inspections through course topics that include characteristics and uses of lead-based paint, lead’s health effects on adults and children, types of lead-based paint housing components, identification of other lead-containing materials in housing, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, paint chip, and dust wipe sampling methodologies, clearance examination procedures, and required documentation and report creation standards. <p>Upon completion of this course, attendees must submit certificate and fees to the State of Michigan to obtain their State certification as lead inspectors, and pass a third party (State) certification exam. Lead inspectors have no requirements for prior experience but do require a high school education or equivalent. Further, State regulations require lead inspectors to undergo XRF manufacturer training prior to conducting XRF analysis.

PLEASE NOTE: As per the Michigan Lead Abatement Act, any individual who wishes to test for lead-based paint in target housing and child-occupied facilities must maintain their State certification as a licensed lead inspector every 3 years. While the required applications are provided during the training course, the fees and required third party (State) licensing exam required for individuals are not included in the cost of the training course.
