Mill Street Site Redevelopment and Environmental Monitoring
Scope of Work :
ETC was retained by the City of Ecorse to provide environmental monitoring, demolition oversight, and remediation support for the Mill Street site, a 66-acre former industrial property targeted for redevelopment. The multi-year project focused on safely preparing the site for future light industrial and logistics use while addressing environmental concerns associated with demolition and site restoration activities.
Work occurred in multiple phases, including building demolition, environmental monitoring, concrete processing, and contaminated soil remediation. Throughout the project, ETC helped ensure that site activities were conducted safely and in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.
ETC's Role :
During the initial demolition phase, ETC provided on-site demolition management and environmental monitoring over a six-month period. Monitoring efforts focused on potential airborne contaminants associated with demolition activities, including asbestos, silica, particulate matter, ozone, and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs).
In addition to field monitoring, ETC worked closely with project stakeholders to address community concerns regarding potential environmental impacts. Data collected throughout the project helped document site conditions and support compliance with environmental requirements during active demolition work.
ETC was later re-engaged to support site restoration activities, including oversight of concrete crushing operations and remediation of impacted soils. These efforts were an important step in preparing the property for future redevelopment and long-term use.
Results and Impact :
The Mill Street project transformed a former industrial property into a site positioned for future redevelopment. Through environmental monitoring, demolition oversight, and remediation support, ETC helped the City of Ecorse move the project forward while maintaining transparency and addressing environmental concerns throughout the process.
The completed demolition and remediation activities created a cleaner, more usable property that supports the city’s broader redevelopment goals. By helping manage environmental risks during each phase of the project, ETC contributed to the successful transition of the site from legacy industrial use toward future economic development opportunities.
